Orad to unveil at NAB 2008 the Portal Media Center which consolidates media types and streamlines the production workflow
Kfar-Saba, Israel, March 13, 2008) - Showcasing for the first time at NAB, the Portal Media Center enables a wide variety of media types to be consolidated entirely in a 3D environment, streamlining the production workflow like never before. Live video feeds, clips, stills, 3D graphics, text and audio are consolidated into a single playout environment.

Orad’s Portal Media Center is the only solution on the market which empowers television artists to create new, dynamic DVE-like effects using popular video formats, live or recorded and without tying up the control room. The Portal Media Center knows which camera media is on the air and actively associates its assigned textual content. In addition, it harmonizes the display of all graphical media so that the production’s brand stands out in an increasingly competitive television marketplace.

One of the most common on-screen presentations in news is the 2-box or 3-box (e.g. news anchor plus remote guests) consumes the production switcher, multiple channels of DVE, a character generator and a video server. This one display requires the efforts of many people and is vulnerable to on-air mistakes mostly due to fast changing conditions in the production or errors in synchronizing the individual devices.

The Portal Media Center streamlines the creation and display of this common presentation by consolidating live video, clips, 3D graphics and audio into a single output that can feed the production switcher.

At the heart of The Portal Media Center is Orad’s HDVG with its powerful video texture technology capable of mapping video onto any 3D object in the scene in real time. Up to 12 SD video inputs, 6 HD video inputs, or a mixture of each can be mapped at the same time. This technology is extended to playing open video files in their native resolution and bit rate directly from shared storage. The HDVG also supports 16 channels of embedded audio for live video input and can perform mixing or cross fades with video clips and wave files.

The Portal Media Center is a dynamic system which actively controls the video router and maps user defined video sources to the relevant 3D object in the scene. Operators or newsroom producers can prepare these source-to-scene object designations, including their associated on-air text labels using an established Orad plugin compatible with popular newsroom systems such as iNews, ENPS, Dalet+ or Octopus.

Using the combination of Portal Media Center and 3Designer’s scene authoring environment, Orad’s solution is a fully featured real time system capable of integrating 3D graphics, lower thirds, clips, video transitions, multiple tickers and more. An artist’s creation can even be populated automatically with data from databases such as Oracle, SQL, ODBC, Excel and more.

The Portal Media Center easily adapts to existing workflows using Orad’s dynamic scene blending module. On air tasks can be distributed among multiple operators controlling the playback of one or multiple HDVGs.

Orad's Graphic Asset Management system (GAM) is fully integrated with the Portal Media Center. This integration allows the association of user definable metadata fields to the assets used in playback. User rights management can be deployed for the entire process.

With The Portal Media Center, journalists can specify the content and sequencing of an entire show using a single plugin in their own newsroom environment. In addition, graphic artists can design the look of the broadcast complete with coordinated video box transitions, effects, and graphics from a desktop authoring environment. Modern media types can finally be treated equally and consolidated into a single playback device where manual or automated control is much more effective.
