Rohde & Schwarz at IBC 2006 in Amsterdam
(01/09/2006) At this year's International Broadcasting Convention IBC, to be held in Amsterdam from September 8 to 12, Rohde & Schwarz will showcase its innovations in hall 8, booth 250, and in the IBC's mobile zone. This year, Rohde & Schwarz will place special emphasis on network monitoring.

Digital transmitter networks have become commonplace worldwide. Many networks are equipped with TV and audio transmitters from Rohde & Schwarz, the leading supplier in this field. The company has now complemented its portfolio by additionally offering numerous new transmitters covering the various standards and ranges. Rohde & Schwarz enjoys a clear edge by coupling years of expertise in mobile radio with specialist know-how in broadcasting. This year, Rohde & Schwarz will place special emphasis on network monitoring. By providing new equipment and options, the company is striving to make it easier for network operators to ensure the failsafe operation and availability of networks.

To enhance the failsafe operation of DVB-T networks and continuously monitor their availability, broadcasting network operators can use a new option for the R&S ETX-T monitoring receiver. The receiver is a cost-efficient tool for ensuring DVB-T transmission quality. R&S ETX-K10 is the first option that allows the monitoring of single frequency network (SFN) functionality. The new option monitors compliance with SFN requirements and signals possible malfunctions at an early stage, thus ensuring high failsafety.
Important new functions have been implemented in the R&S DVM family, a measure-ment system for monitoring and analyzing more than just MPEG-2 transport streams. RF modules allow signals of the DVB-T, DVB-C, and DVB-S standards, plus of the new DVB-S2 satellite transmission standard, to be demodulated and monitored. One or more DTV signals can thus be completely monitored in a single box, saving space and cost.
Video and sound decoding is possible for all instruments of the R&S DVM family. The new hardware decoder supports MPEG-2 as well as the trend-setting H.264 standard, also referred to as MPEG-4 or AVC. Since both SDTV and HDTV formats are decoded in realtime, the R&S DVM allows program identification as well as subjective picture quality assessment.
For development and service applications, Rohde & Schwarz presents a new TV analyzer platform for digital and analog TV. Based on an innovative instrument concept, new TV and broadcasting standards can be implemented on a software basis. Moreover, future modifications of existing standards can be incorporated quickly.
By providing an ISDB-T coder, the R&S SFU universal broadcast test system now supports all internationally common digital TV standards. The R&S SFU is the only test transmitter to provide DVB-H, T-DMB, ISDB-T, DMB-TH and MediaFLOTM on a single platform. In addition, the R&S SFU-K354 digital radio mondiale (DRM) option with an extensive test signal library is available for testing digital shortwave trans-mission. To allow realistic testing of mobile propagations, scenarios with occupied adjacent channels were developed in accordance with IEC 62002, also referred to as the MBRAI standard. These scenarios can be simulated by using the enhanced R&S SFU-K199 analog TV option and the R&S SFU-K354 digital interferer option.
Furthermore, two audio transmitter models will be showcased. The FM transmitters of the new R&S SR8000 series for output power of 100 W to 1 kW are equipped with a digital exciter. The exciter combines the first-rate specifications of analog exciters with the reliability of modern digital signal processing. Due to their compact design, the transmitters occupy maximally four height units. All functions are integrated in a single box; SFN operation is possible. The FM transmitters of the R&S NR8200 series com-plement the portfolio for transmit power of 2.5 kW to 40 kW. For mobile TV in accord-ance with the T-DMB standard, three T-DMB/DAB transmitter families are available: the R&S NA6000 and R&S NA7000 with output power of 200 W to 3600 W in the VHF band III, and for L-band the R&S NL6000 with output power of 200 W to 1600 W.
The R&S SV8000 platform is available for digital TV standards (ATSC, DVB-T/-H). It has been designed for TV power up to 400 W in the UHF band. Like their predecessors of the R&S SV7000 series, the new transmitters are highly modular and flexible. Standby configurations, remote control interfaces and other characteristics typical of Rohde & Schwarz, such as automatic digital precorrection, are of course also available for this transmitter family.
Rohde & Schwarz also offers DVB-H playout with statistical multiplex for playout centers. For this purpose, the R&S DIP010 data inserter and generator and, brand-new, the R&S AVE264 encoder are available. The H.264 video encoder for DVB-H comes with a variable bit rate. The statistic multiplex principle is implemented: With DVB-H, several TV programs with different data rates are transmitted via one channel. Picture sequences with a high amount of movement require a higher data rate than picture content with less movement. The H.264 video encoder coordinates these diverse requirements, ensuring optimum use of the transmission channel
